Pekmez

Pekmez (turkish) or Grape Syrup, is a viscous juice of various fruits – Such as: Grapes, apples and or carob.

Pekmez in Turkey is still often self-prepared by hand. Grape syrup or Pekmez should be a source of energy, it should therefore be consumed before physical exertion, or if something requires more energy than normal.

Ingredients

Pekmez as mentioned above consits of different ingredients such as apples, grapes and carob. Therefore, the ingredients will depend also on the particular ingredients.

Vitamins and Minerals

Apples contain beta carotene and some B vitamins such as B1, B2, B3, B5 and B6, vitamin C and vitamin E.

From the minerals potassium would only be significant and from the trace elements copper and manganese.

Grapes also contain the B vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5 and B6 and vitamin E. From the minerals potassium would also noteworthy.

Turkish Cuisine – Use

Pekmez or grape syrup is in the Turkish cuisine often used in conjunction with Tahini = Sesame Paste.

This is then called in Turkish Tahini Pekmez. Pekmez can be established by yourself, but can be also bought in the Turkish grocery store in a glass.

Tahini Pekmez is in the Turkish Cuisine also used as a spread for bread and gladly eat for breakfast, it should be a source of energy.
